A Vast Rural Region

The NoRTEC region is located at the northern end of California and encompasses over 24% of California's land area — roughly 32,000 square miles. Population density is sparse in many areas; the total population has grown from 703,017 to 712,382 over the past decade.

To illustrate the scale: traveling between the Sierraville AJCC in Sierra County and the Crescent City AJCC in Del Norte County is more than an 850-mile round trip.

The regional economy is diverse, encompassing manufacturing, agriculture, services, retail, IT, tourism, healthcare, and education. NoRTEC believes that working on a regional scale strengthens local efforts and helps the area compete more effectively in the national and global economy.
